Rural-urban fringe

Synoptic links

The 2002 Edexcel B Issues Analysis Bassetts Pole was located in the rural-urban fringe zone on the Sutton Coldfield (NE edge of Birmingham) and provided prime Greenfield sites for development. It posed precise issues of a threatened countryside, as the greenbelt status can be disregarded in exceptional circumstances of need – in this case a high quality, large site for a Business Park. Additionally the UK’s first toll motorway passed through it. The issues were contentious and conflicts between local, regional and national requirements existed. Local residents were very anti, but regionally the city council were determined to provide quality sites for high technology parks etc.

Level 1 Poorly developed case study. Some appropriate description but limited identification of conflicts.
1-4
Level 2 Some structure is an account which is linked to a relevant example and explains several relative conflicts.
8-5
Level 3 Well structured account, which shows sound location detail and good knowledge of chosen example and the conflict caused. 9-10
